Vascular Imaging
Vascular imaging uses noninvasive ultrasound technology to evaluate blood flow through the arteries and veins throughout the body. These studies help diagnose narrowing or blockage of arteries, blood clots, poor circulation, and other vascular conditions before they lead to more serious complications. Ultrasound imaging is painless, does not use radiation, and provides real-time information to help your healthcare provider diagnose and monitor vascular disease. At Affinity Heart Care, we perform five types of vascular ultrasounds:
Carotid Ultrasound
A carotid ultrasound evaluates the carotid arteries in the neck, which supply blood to the brain. This noninvasive test uses sound waves to detect plaque buildup, narrowing (stenosis), or other abnormalities that may increase the risk of stroke. A carotid ultrasound may be recommended for patients with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), carotid bruit, dizziness, or risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Lower Extremity Arterial Ultrasound
A lower extremity arterial ultrasound assesses blood flow through the arteries of the legs. This study helps identify narrowed or blocked arteries caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which can reduce circulation to the legs and feet. It is commonly recommended for patients experiencing leg pain with walking (claudication), nonhealing wounds, cold feet, or diminished pulses. The results help guide treatment to improve circulation and reduce the risk of complications.
Lower Extremity Venous Doppler Ultrasound
A lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasound evaluates the veins in the legs to assess blood flow and detect conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), venous insufficiency, or vein obstruction. This painless examination is often performed for patients with leg swelling, pain, redness, warmth, or suspected blood clots. Early diagnosis is important to help prevent complications and guide appropriate treatment.
Renal Artery Ultrasound
A renal artery ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging test that uses sound waves and Doppler technology to evaluate blood flow through the renal arteries and kidneys. It is commonly performed to detect narrowing (renal artery stenosis), assess kidney size and blood supply, and help investigate causes of high blood pressure or decreased kidney function.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Ultrasound
An abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging test that uses sound waves to examine the abdominal aorta, the body’s largest artery. The exam measures the size of the aorta and checks for aneurysms (abnormal enlargement), helping to screen for, diagnose, or monitor an abdominal aortic aneurysm and reduce the risk of rupture through early detection.
